Build trust with a working result, protect it with honesty, and compound it with useful content.

The Trust Dividend

Enterprise customers are immune to slides. FDEs rebuild trust by doing the work, telling the truth, and sharing what they learn.

Enterprise customers have been disappointed by too many AI vendors. They are immune to slides. An FDE rebuilds trust through two behaviors: doing the work in the customer’s environment and being honest about what will not work.

After reading, you should be able to answer:

  • How trust accumulates, increment by increment, inside the details of delivery
  • Why “give first, talk money later” usually pays better in an FDE engagement
  • How a one-off project turns into a relationship the customer keeps trusting

Rebuild trust by doing

Build with the customer’s data, inside the customer’s environment, and make the result run in front of the people who will use it. Then say no when an assumption is wrong. A working prototype is more persuasive than a longer feasibility report.

Palantir proceduralized that trust production into what the industry calls a bootcamp: at the end of the stay, executives click through a prototype that really runs — which retires most of the feasibility report. Minimum Viable Deployment covers why that window has to be measured in days. a16z’s takeaway from the same playbook is one rule: by every means available, get the first three to five customers actually running in production, instead of producing a more beautiful plan a16z-palantirization.

Technical content marketing

Trust compounds when field lessons become useful articles, case studies, guides, and templates. Content is not decoration: it shows future customers and future teammates that the organization understands the hard parts because it has done the work.

Be willing to say no

Honesty is the foundation. A short-term “no” can protect a long-term relationship. The FDE’s value is not saying what the customer wants to hear; it is telling the truth early enough that the team can still make a better decision.
